Abstract We isolated pepT from Bacillus subtilis , a gene with homology to various tripeptidases from different bacterial sources, pepT is preceded by genes encoding a two component regulatory system. Its expression is activated during stationary phase. In minimal medium this activation is boosted in the presence of phosphate. The response regulator is preceded by putative promoter consensus sequences recognized by the stationary phase specific sigma factors σ H , σ F , and σ G . This is in accordance with the initiation of expression at the beginning of stationary phase. Inactivation of pepT causes no obvious phenotype. 相似文献

Starfish waste has been shown to be an effective compost material not only in the promotion of plant growth but also in terms
of having insecticidal activity. In the present study, plant growth regulation by chemicals from starfish was examined. The
aqueous fraction from a hot water extract of the starfish Asterias amurensis Lütken showed plant-growth activity, while the aqueous fraction from a methanol extract inhibited growth of Brassica campestris. The lipophilic fraction from the methanol extract also exhibited a plant growth-promoting effect. The active components
from each extract were identified. Asterubine from the hot water extract promoted plant growth. A ceramide from the lipophilic
fraction showed root growth promoting effect, and three glucocerebrosides had promotive effects on the entire plant. Asterosaponins
were identified as the main growth inhibitors in the aqueous fraction of the methanol extract. These active compounds from
starfish waste could be analyzed as potential plant growth regulators in agricultural applications in the future. 相似文献

Previous studies have demonstrated that higher nitrogen (N) and water availability affect both above- and below-ground communities, soil carbon and N pools, and microbial activity in semi-arid grasslands of Inner Mongolia. However, how soil phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) pools, and related soil enzyme activities (as indicators of P and S cycles) respond to long-term N and water addition has still remained unclear. Since 2005, a field experiment with urea and water amendments has been conducted to examine their effects on total and available P and S concentrations and alkaline phosphomonoesterase (PME) and aryl-sulfatase (ArS) activities in three soil aggregate fractions: large macroaggregates (>2 mm), small macroaggregates (0.25–2 mm), and microaggregates (<0.25 mm) in an Inner Mongolia semi-arid grassland. Normalized to aggregate mass, microaggregates retained the highest total P and S concentrations. Both N and water additions increased the available P (by up to 84.5%) and the available S (by up to 150%) in the soil aggregate fractions. Soil acidification, as a result of the N addition, decreased both alkaline PME and ArS activities by up to 62.9% and 39.6%, respectively, while the water addition increased their activities. Our observations revealed that soil acidification (under the N addition) and elevated enzyme activity (under the water addition) played important roles in the levels of soil available P and S. The depression of P- and S-acquiring enzymes with soil acidification may decrease P and S availability, potentially impacting ecosystem processes and limiting the restoration of these grassland systems. The water addition was shown to be a more effective practice than the urea amendment for improving soil structure, supplying available P and S, and maintaining the sustainability of this semi-arid grassland. 相似文献

Coral reefs are expected to be severely impacted by rising seawater temperatures associated with climate change. The fertilization
and early embryogenesis of four reef-building coral species representing three Indo-Pacific families were examined in a series
of laboratory experiments where temperatures were increased up to 5–6°C at ambient. High levels of fertilization and normal
embryogenesis were observed for Favites abdita, Favites chinensis and Mycedium elephantotus at temperatures to 32°C (+5°C) and embryos developed normally until the 5th cell cleavage. Acropora millepora was the only species to be affected by higher temperatures, exhibiting significantly reduced fertilization and a higher frequency
of embryonic abnormalities at 32°C (+4°C), and fertilization ceased altogether at 34°C (+6°C). Early cell cleavage rates increased

Extensive economic growth, tourism activities and over-exploitation of resources have become the common causes of environmental degradation in Langkawi. The sudden development leap resulting from UNESCO's recognition of Langkawi Archipelago as a Global Geopark in 2007, leads to continuous conflicts between enhancing environmental protection and meeting tourism and development needs. Environmental sensitivity evaluation is a basis upon which the concept of environmentally sensitive areas (ESAs) can be practised in order to protect the environment, regulate development activities and promote sustainable land use planning. This study embarks on evaluating and classifying environmental sensitivity as well as comparing different ESA approaches applicable for land use planning in Langkawi. A GIS-based integrated evaluation model was performed on two assessment sets (Set A and Set B) using a standard grading system and weights determined with analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method. Of these sets, the former consists of selected indicators from the Malaysian integrated ESA instrument while the latter are derived from previous eco-environmental studies conducted in China. The projected final ESA maps of Langkawi indicate spatial distribution of four environmental sensitivity classes. More highly and moderately sensitive areas are observed in Set A, accounting for 339.15 km2 or 72.24% of the total land area compared to Set B with only 259.04 km2 or 55.18% respectively. The results also reveal large proportion of low sensitivity areas in Set A, covering areas of 117.42 km2 (25.01%). In contrast, more areas with non-sensitivity are widely distributed in Set B, occupying areas of 123.02 km2 (26.20%). Taking into consideration the natural and cultural characteristics of the islands, it is suggested that Set A is a better approach to portray current environmental concerns and to coordinate future land use planning as well as fits Langkawi's aspiration in becoming a sustainable, world-class Global Geopark. This study provides beneficial information and opportunity for reasonable rearrangement of zoning and development guidelines and strategies within sensitivity areas. It promotes effective utilization of the natural resources, minimizes negative tourism impacts and adequately highlights ecosystem functions to prosper local socio-economic growth. It also represents an early step for the design of universal ESA instruments to regulate local development activities and promote sustainable land use planning in vulnerable areas at global levels. 相似文献

This article is focused on the modalities of reception of cytokinins which remain largely unknown. It summarizes the main steps of the different protocols used to study cytokinin-binding proteins (CBPs). We place emphasis on the significance and specificity of the detection according to the properties of the probes used: radioactive or photoreactive cytokinins, fluorescent anticytokinins, anti-idiotype antibodies. The purification procedures are also examined. The cellular localisation and the putative physiological roles of the numerous and different CBPs found are considered. We compare the performances of local and global rules for smoothingparameter choice, in terms of asymptotic mean squared errorsof the resulting estimators.
